Dr. LaFree is currently the director of the START Center, the fourth Center of Excellence funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The START Center began in June 2005 with a three-year budget of $12 million. Since beginning operation, START has generated another $2.5 million in research grants. Dr. LaFree serves half time as the director of START and half time as a researcher within START. As a researcher, Dr. LaFree has been primarily involved in the development of the Global Terrorism Data base, a comprehensive open source database of global terrorist events from 1970 to the present. Dr, LaFree is currently involved in a variety of projects involving analysis of this data base.

DIn 2005-2006 Dr. LaFree served as the President of the American Society of Criminology. He has also chaired the Crime, Law and Deviance section of the American Sociological Association and the international division of the American Society of Criminology, has been a member of the H.F. Guggenheim Foundation's research board, and is a fellow of the National Consortium for Violence Research.

He is the author of "The Nature of Crime" and “Losing Legitimacy: Street Crime and the Decline of Social Institutions in America.”
