Credentials
Dr. Mowrer is one of eight researchers who received
grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to collect data on structural
engineering and damage assessment at the terrorist attack sites in New
York City and Washington, D.C. He created post-September 11 stir by revealing
that imperfect fire-proofing materials may have played a role in the collapse
of the World Trade Center Towers.
Dr Mowrer worked as consultant for an International Fire Protection Engineering
firm and as an engineering representative for an insurance organization
before entering academia. He has participated in the investigation and
analysis of a number of major fires, including the fires at the MGM Grand
Hotel, the Las Vegas Hilton, the DuPont Plaza Hotel, the Cook County Administration
Building and the Branch Davidian compound near Waco, as well as numerous
other fires. He is well-versed on building fire safety regulations and
performance-based fire safety design issues.
Dr. Mowrer is the former president of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers
and currently serves as chair of the SFPE Technical Steering Committee.
He is an active member of the National Fire Protection Association, currently
serving as chair of the Research Advisory Committee of the Fire Protection
Research Foundation.
