Credentials

Dr. Subrahmanian is the designer of the first widely recognized architecture for reasoning about groups situated in diverse cultures. He built award winning systems to extract knowledge about any entity or group in the world (the STORY system) as well as to integrate multiple data, knowledge and software sources. His OASYS system for identifying the intensity of opinion in news sources in multiple languages won Computerworld Magazine’s prestigious 2006 Horizon Awards. In addition, Prof. Subrahmanian developed the foundations of scalable probabilistic prediction and reasoning, and activity identification in large scale databases. He has developed some of the first algorithms to built behavioral models of cultural groups and predict what they will do. His well known IMPACT agent system ties together diverse software modules and data sources in a unified way.

He has previous served as a member of the Executive Advisory Council for the DARPA Advanced Logistics Program (ALP), and as an Ad-hoc Member of the US Air Force Science Advisory Board. He is listed on ISIHighlycited.com – a web site that lists approximately the top 250 scientists in each of several scientific disciplines. He received NSF’s National Young Investigator Award and was named a Distinguished Young Scientist by the Maryland Academy of Sciences. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Development Gateway Foundation – an organization founded by the World Bank to promote the use of IT for improving the quality of governance and life in developing countries.
