The Department of Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) supports institutional research and training programs by administering all of the laboratory animal services of the Campus. Departmental personnel provide the following services:
  1. humane and scientifically appropriate care for all research animals in compliance with the NIH Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals;
  2. training in animal-use procedures;
  3. purchase of research animals and animal care supplies and equipment;
  4. diagnostic, therapeutic and prophylactic veterinary services; and
  5. professional consultation on experimental protocols, appropriate animal models and animal research methods.
LAR also collaborates with the UM Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.

The Office of the Director of Laboratory Animal Resources is located in the Central Animal Resources Facility (CARF) Building #087, Telephone extension 54921. Dr. Douglas Powell is the current Director.

In addition, the University of Maryland Libraries maintains a website with information on library resources and on-line documents dealing with animal welfare. The Animal Welfare: A Guide to Library Resources site covers information about the use of animals in research, testing and teaching, alternatives to animal use, and the training and education of animal caretakers and technicians.
