  1. Animal Research Activities

    A. University of Maryland - College Park

All animal research activities performed on campus affiliated facilities MUST be conducted under an IACUC approved animal use protocol. IACUC approval is required before the research can begin.

Studies in which tissues are obtained from animals that were used in other studies AND were euthanized for use in those other studies, do not require a protocol. A protocol is not required to obtain tissues from a slaughterhouse or a biological supply house.

The Campus IACUC monitors the animal use activities in the following sites: the College Park Campus, the CMREC, the WMREC, the Poultry Research Center, and the Wye Research and Education Center.

    B. Field Studies

Field studies require IACUC review and approval as above.

    C. Collaborative Research - Other Institutions

If animal research activities are conducted at another institution, these activities must be approved by BOTH that institution's IACUC AND the College Park IACUC. Please contact the IACUC manager before filling out the VMCP Animal Study Protocol.

Institutions with which collaborative studies are planned should have an Assurance Statement on file with the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) of NIH (NIH Assurance Status). This is a federal requirement for any collaborative study involving Public Health Service Funding (NIH, NSF) and applies also to those vendors/commercial collaborators. The NIH Assurance Status requirement applies also to those vendors/commercial companies which produce custom polyclonal or monocoloanl antibodies.

    D. Student Research

Student research activities are conducted under the approved animal use protocol(s) of their campus graduate advisor. The advisor is listed as the primary investigator. If the animal studies are conducted at another institution, the requirements as outlined in Collaborative Research - Other Institutions (above) applies.

    E. Research Funding

ORAA will not release awarded funds until AFTER the animal studies described in the proposal have received campus IACUC approval. Contact ORAA or the IACUC manager (graebel@umd.edu) if you have any questions.

The campus NIH Assurance Number is: A3270-01. When completing NIH or NSF proposals, use this number for the “Animal Welfare Assurance Number.”

  2. Animal Teaching Activities

All animal procedures conducted as part of a course taught under the campus' auspices MUST be approved by the IACUC. Please include copies of the handouts/lab sheets given to the students.

  3. Agriculture Extension Activities

Animal teaching/demonstration activities conducted EITHER with campus owned animals OR on campus affiliated facilities MUST be reviewed and approved by the IACUC. Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) describing the activities that will involve animals should be included.
