- University of Maryland – Animal Care & Use Personnel Health Program
The Health Program for personnel who do animal research, work in laboratory animal facilities,
and/or have frequent contact with animals is based on the individual’s health history and the
risks associated with their animal activities.
Each individual, with his/her immediate supervisor, completes the
Animal
Handler Health Profile -- Risk Assessment form, which details the species
and other potential hazards associated with his/her activities. The individual
also completes his/her
Occupational
Health History and Clinician Evaluation form (after reviewing the University Health Center's
Notice of Privacy Practices),
then sends that form along with the Risk Assessment form to the
Campus Office of
Occupational Health in the University Health Center. These two documents are then reviewed
by the physicians in the office and, if necessary, further evaluations are conducted.
Documentation of the assessment by the Office of Occupation Health is sent to the
individual, the individual’s immediate supervisor, and the Director for Laboratory
Animal Resources.
- Risk Assessment
The University of California at Davis has an on-line
Risk
Assessment Tool that can provide supervisors, safety
coordinators, and workers information on how to stay safe
and healthy while working with animals. Indicate the
species you will be working with, and the site returns information
on potential hazards and important precautions.
