Collaborative Research at the University of Maryland
Guiding Principles
The University of Maryland is a public research university, the flagship
campus of the University System of Maryland, and the original 1862 land-grant
institution in Maryland. The University is committed to achieve excellence
as the State’s primary center of research and graduate education.
Partnerships between the University and industry will assist the University
to fulfill this role through the advancement of knowledge, providing outstanding
and innovative instruction, and nourishing a climate of intellectual growth
in a broad range of academic disciplines and interdisciplinary fields.
It creates and applies knowledge for the benefit of the economy and culture
of the State, region, the nation, and beyond by providing economic growth
and improved standard of living to its various constituencies, including
private companies, for the benefit of the state of Maryland.

named as research priorities. Certain types of research arrangements have
also received the designation as high priority.

Industrial
Affiliate Programs
Affiliate memberships afford companies the opportunity to enjoy special
relationships in the areas of greatest value to them. Each Affiliate Program
is free to focus on the interests of the involved faculty and allied industries.
While each program has its own membership fees and benefits, consistent
emphasis on close, effective communication exists between member companies
and the faculty, staff, and students in the program.
University Research
Centers
URCs are large interdisciplinary research programs. The URC Incentive
Program provides support in development stages of major multidisciplinary
research programs and annual support after an award is received.
Faculty Areas of Interest
Individual
faculty research interests are frequently found within departments on
school sites, but this varies by school. Organizations or companies who
are members of the Community of Science can search their database
by area of expertise and other categories.
